국외 [Yonhap News] Through play, Korean juvenile inmates heal, connect, grow

UIWANG, South Korea, July 1 (Yonhap) -- On a recent stuffy summer afternoon, a play was performed at a school in Uiwang city, Gyeonggi Province.

High fences and a strict entry process indicate this is no ordinary school. Visitors need to get permission in advance and check their IDs at the entrance.

The Gobong School is run by the Crime Prevention Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Justice, with a special reformatory purpose for juvenile offenders.

Once passing through two security doors and entering the school, there were no noticeable features hinting at the nature of the school. It was spacious and quiet, and the well-maintained school yard had trees and grass.

In the auditorium, eight juvenile inmates in black suits rehearsed their upcoming performance. Shortly before the play, around 300 other inmates with close-cropped hair, sporting gray T-shirts and black shorts, some covered in tattoos, flooded in, being boisterous and loud. Soon, a few dozens spectators also entered the hall and were guided to their seats.

The play was the fourth of its kind, organized by the school, the nonprofit organization Happitory and the theater company Hae.

"When I worked as a prosecutor, I often felt helpless dealing with juvenile crimes," said Kwon Yong-seok, a prosecutor-turned-lawyer who founded the organization in 2009. "While some of the crimes were serious and some looked highly likely to commit a crime again, the environment that they were in, in many cases, was too poor to ask them to bear the sole responsibility for their crimes."

He and his wife Noh Ji-hyang, head of the theater company, have visited the school since 2014. For the fourth play, since March, they've had a weekly healing play session where juvenile offenders share their private stories, listen to others and make plays based on their own life stories.

In the beginning, Noh found it really challenging to make them open up. Most kids had difficulties talking about their family matters.

"Every human being wants their voices to be heard. As time went by, they were able to speak their mind bit by bit and in their own way," she said.

The play didn't follow a strict script. The boys acted and threw in their own lines spontaneously in scenes that were based on the real life stories they had shared before.

During the performance, the teenage boys told the audience what their lives were like, how they landed themselves in trouble and how they felt about their parents, some verbally and physically abusive, others outright indifferent, still others simply struggling to eke out a living.

Near the end, each one of the eight performers revealed how they want their life to be like in 10 years. Everyone had different dreams -- a hair designer, a baker, a mechanic, a golfer, a cook, a psychotherapist, a baseball player and a wedding planner.

"We don't expect to see a change overnight. If the play can give them confidence, that will do," said Lee Wan, an official from the school. "After 34 years of experience in this field, I learned that we need to recognize them as equal, individual human beings, not as kids," he said.

After ending the nearly two-hour show, eight boys and teachers got together to celebrate the successful performance.

Excited and relieved at the same time, they cut a cake together and devoured it. Some joked about how nervous they were and others regretted that they could have done better.

"There is a saying that a kid doesn't grow up to be a troubled man if there is a single person out there he or she can count on," said Noh, the producer. "It is really heartbreaking that there is no one for some kids."

She paused a moment before she said, "If possible, I want to be that one person."
